inFamous and Titanfall – Mediocrity overlooked?

Titanfall and inFamous have seen their fair share of praise and critical acclaim but both have glaring faults which have been overlooked. This is of course due to a drought in gaming goodness for the supposed ‘next-gen’ consoles. It’s been a long, cold, dry spell if you’re an Xbox One or PS4 owner. Never in the history of the Playstation or Xbox have I ever been so bored or underwhelmed by the offerings a few months in to their console lives. Have they just capitalized on a severe lack of games for each system or did we actually start believing the hype? Keep Reading…

Europe snubs the Xbox One and Titanfall – Why?

I reported a few weeks ago that the PS4 was crushing the Wii U and Xbox One and that momentum hasn’t ceased. This being despite the release of Titanfall, coupled with widespread official and non official price drops in the continent. Should Microsoft abandon all hope in Europe?
But wait, there’s more!

Ouya outselling Xbox One on Amazon.com

After the sales spike the Xbox seen due to release of Titanfall it seems normal service has been resumed. A list of the Best sellers in videogames shows the Ouya console at number 9 and the Xbox One currently two places behind. The Playstation 4 seems to marginally outselling both, sitting currently at number 7.

amazon

Of course, Amazon isn’t the only place to buy consoles from and it’s currently not particularly price competitive with the new consoles. Amazon in the UK had shown that the Xbox One wasn’t selling well at all but when sales figure were released it was the number 1 console for the last 4 weeks.

This news is relevant with gamers questioning the longevity of the sales increase after the mega-hit Titanfall dropped a few weeks ago, I think this has answered that question.

Never cheat on your girlfriend – Boyfriends TV and PS3 ruined

There are many fake videos circulating that depict women smashing their love rat boyfriends belongings but this seems legit. The video is foreign and the story behind it is unclear but one thing is for certain, don’t fu*k with this woman.

Hell, if someone did this to me it would hurt one million times more than a broken heart. I’d rather someone take my soul than my consoles, poor guy.

Xbox One currently outselling the PS4 globally

News has just come in that the Xbox One has shot straight to the top of the global hardware charts for the first time since it was released.

This follows the news that the Xbox One has been outselling the PS4 for the past 4 weeks in the UK. The above graph shows the Global sales. Th graph below shows the sales for the US alone and coincides with my prediction for the Xbox One to dominate the US in 2014 a few days ago.

Whether or not the current trend will continue is another question but this is great news for Microsoft and the games industry as a whole.

Titanfall vs inFamous review scores

This unlikely battle is drawing to a close and it seems that it will be Titanfall which is will be the critics choice according to metacritic. This is a surprising turn of events considering their respective genres, with FPS games usually being underscored and under-appreciated by top gaming critics.

Titanfall currently stands on an average score of 86/100 for the Xbox One and 88/100 for PC. Quite what the PC version had that the One version didn’t I guess we shall never know.

Review scores for inFamous are flooding in and it currently stands on 81/100, not a bad score by any means but not they of score Playstation fans were expecting or hoping for.

Titanfall currently has 57 positive reviews, 2 mixed and 0 negative reviews to its name. inFamous on the other hand has 46 positive, 14 mixed and 0 negative. Titanfall may have won the battle, scoring a massive plus for Xbox One fans but whether or not it can win the war for Microsoft is up in the air.

Are either of the games the system sellers we were told they would be?

10 reasons why the Xbox One will dominate the US this year

The Xbox One has had a troubled start to life, losing out to the PS4 at an alarming rate. North America represents the home of Microsoft and last generation seen the Xbox 360 sell 46 millions units there alone, which represents over half of total Xbox 360 sales. The PS4 currently is outselling the Xbox One in North America but here I shall outline 10 reasons why this early dominance won’t last. Before you continue please read my 7 Spectacular facts about Xbox One sales! Keep Reading

Playstation fans take to the internet to scupper Titanfall review scores

The release of Titanfall hasn’t pleased Playstation users. They started by attacking metacritic scores and have now find their way on to Amazon in an attempt to put off potential buyers. Metacritic was always going to take a battering, with Call of Duty usually on the receiving end of unjust, fake reviews but nobody wants to give Xbox One their day in the spotlight.

How do we know it is Sony fanboys at work?

We must look at the PC version of the game to see any genuine reviews as the PC version will not be trolled by Playstation fans. The PC version on Amazon.com currently has 53 reviews with only three of them giving 1 star out of a possible 5. One of these reviews is actually a guy complaining that the 1 star review he gave has been taken down on the Xbox One review section, such is desperation to get at Microsoft. If we compare this to the Xbox One version on Amazon then we see that out of 317 reviews there are 56 one star reviews given, many by non-verified accounts. The situation is similar in the UK, with currently no 1 star reviews for the PC version and 7 out of 29 one star reviews on the Xbox One.

The controversy doesn’t end there, with forums being lit up with accusations of Amazon removing 1 star reviews to somehow benefit Microsoft. A conspiracy that surely only the wildest and most imaginative fanboy could ever think up. The widespread hate for Microsoft and the Xbox One has reared its ugly head once again, when it should be a celebration of a big release and great review scores.

The hatred was already apparent on Metacritic, which allows all types of trolling. The problem with sites like these is that anybody can sign up without verifying they own the game and can obviously create multiple accounts to bring down scores. If you are one of the people doing this then I seriously suggest getting a hobby or go back to playing the console you love. Leave the world decide what to buy by themselves.

This is going to be a constant cycle of illegitimately trashing game scores to try and divert the public from buying from a different console. We should realize that we are all playing for the same team, will gamers ever unite?

European Console sales update – PS4 plunges

ps4saless
source: VGChartz.com

We reported a while back that the PS4 had been outselling the Xbox at a rate of over 3:1 in Europe, this gap has been decreased to nearly 2:1 . This is despite the fact that the Xbox One has been delayed until Q3 in major European countries, which is certainly good news for Xbox One fans.

Titanfall sales – The console war continues

It’s fair to say that Titanfall has been the most hyped and talked about game in recent memory. However, the gaming public seem to have an unhealthy obsession with numbers and sales and so far they have yet to be released. I would assume that if the sales numbers would of been significant then we would of received an announcement by now. If Titanfall does manage to someone ‘flop’ this will be unceremoniously celebrated amongst PS4 fanboys, who already took to metacritic to try and derail the Titanfall juggernaut by giving fake reviews. This will undoubtedly lead to a retaliation when Infamous: Second Son releases shortly. Keep Reading…

Thrustmaster T100 Force Feedback Racing Wheel Review – PC/PS3

The Thrustmaster T100 is the latest in Thrustmasters long line of gaming wheels. If it’s one thing they know about it’s how to make a good wheel and a wheel that gives value for money, no matter what budget you have. Xbox One now same price as PS4 in the UK online in Maplin

UK retailer Maplin has slashed the price of the Xbox One to make it the same price as the PS4. This making it the first retailer to do so. The price cut was anticipated by many but Maplin in the UK are the first to make it price competitive with the PS4. It has slashed the price by £80 and now retails at £349.99, the exact price same as the PS4 retails for.

It seems reasonable to suggest that this price cut will spread, considering Gamestop in the UK currently have the Xbox One bundle with Titanfall for £369.97. This is probably a better deal than the Maplin one considering that Titanfall will be at least £39.99 when released.

This is a much needed move for Xbox fans and with Titanfall around the corner it may finally push those waiting for a price fall to take the plunge and buy an Xbox One. One of the biggest issues the Xbox One faced was the price in comparison to the cheaper and more powerful PS4. This deal is certainly a step in the right direction for Microsoft considering their sales woes of recent times.

The deal can be found here. It will be interesting to see how much sales improve in the UK or if other retailers will follow suit.

Speedlink Kudos RS gaming mouse review

This is Speedlinks top end gaming mouse, aimed at the enthusiast or those looking for a serious, high grade mouse. It is notably different from the Decus I reviewed, both in shape, feel and performance. The biggest difference you will notice straight away is the ability to add weights to the mouse. Is it worth the step up in price compared to it’s more affordable brother?

Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U European sales surprise

UPDATE: March 14th European console sales found here. Xbox One cuts in to PS4s lead.

With both consoles coming under scrutiny for sales performance in recent times, it may come as a surprise that they are virtually neck and neck for weekly sales in Europe. The Xbox One has seen a huge drop off in sales globally, and a territory Microsoft were once strong in is currently shunning them in favor of the PS4.

**UPDATE** – Xbox One now available for same price as PS4 in the UK

wii u xbox one
Sales figures for the Xbox One and Wii U show the consoles are much closer than expected. Source: VGChartz.com

With the spotlight of poor sales firmly being fixated on the Wii U over the last year or so, it is the Xbox One which is now struggling. Both have failed to capture the imagination of the gaming public and are both being outsold by the PS4 by 3:1.

Updated graph with the inclusion of PS4, showing its European dominance

Upcoming Titanfall for the Xbox One and Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U will look to close that gap but it seems unlikely. The Playstation has remained a favorite in Europe for some time and whilst it’s no surprise that the Xbox is trailing, it is a shock by exactly how much they’re trailing by.

What is probably most shocking is the fact that the PS3 is beating the Xbox One/Wii U consistently on a weekly basis in Europe. Here’s the graph of the PS3 vs Xbox One sales in Europe.

Europe looks to be a lost cause to both of these consoles, North America is the Xbox Ones best chance of success and the Wii U will look to boost sales in it’s home country. Is the war already over?

How the average Xbox gamer looks according to facts

This is part of a new series where we look at the demographics of gamers and blend all these ingredients up and create the average user. Today is the turn of Xbox gamers.

So what do we know about Xbox users?

We know that the Xbox One is marketed towards the 18-34 year old male but despite this the average age is on the top end of this. It’s safe to assume the average Xbox Gamer is mid to late 30s, this being confirmed with the term ‘dad box’ which has been floating around recently.

We also know that the Xbox has the most users who spend most of their time online. Whether this be through games themselves or watching TV. So based on this assumption we can safely say that the Xbox gamer is probably the laziest and weightiest of the bunch.

We have to make assumptions if we want to create a character that represents the average Xbox gamer. We know that the average user who falls in to the 30s bracket is of a household with a relatively good income so this should be reflected in clothing. We know the late 30s age range will have greying hair, probably short and because of their laziness we can add relevant stubble and weight.

We can assume they will have a surprised look about them, possibly due to how bad their console is performing. It could also be due to the copious amounts of Red Bull they drink to keep themselves up all night gaming online. The Xbox is the place to be for FPS games so we can also be safe in saying that they are the angriest of console gamers, and this will be reflected in the facial expression.

Based on these facts and opinions I have come to the conclusion the average Xbox owner looks like this:

Xbox One set to eclipse Atari 7800 sales

Just weeks after defeating the Wonderswan the Xbox One is set for an all time high by surpassing the Atari 7800 in sales. The Xbox One is now less than a million units behind the classic console and shows the strength and depth of the console considering it has only been out a few months.

Major-Nelson
Major Nelson was looking rather smug with the news

We must not forget it has been a few weeks since it overtook Nokias N-Gage in terms of overall sales, something which fans were evidently pleased over. Microsoft made the announcement to the excited fans at a recent conference and this was their reaction.

During the conference one man could be heard shouting ”SEGA Saturn, you’re next!” whilst others were visibly moved and broke down in tears. The Xbox One currently trails the Playstation 2 which sits at the top of the all time chart by 154 million, but if this rate continues we must suspect that overall dominance is a sure thing.

Why the Xbox One justs needs one ‘system seller’ to compete with the PS4

If we look at the history of Playstation it shows us that none of its exclusives sell a system. Last generation the highest selling exclusive was Gran Turismo selling 10 million copies, whilst the next best was God of War with a mere 5 million. On the PS2 the result was similar with Gran Turismo being way ahead of any other console exclusive and I wouldn’t consider it a ‘system seller’. Gran Turismo 3 sold 15 million but if you consider the PS2 sold over 150 million consoles it proves the Playstation has never had any killer exclusives, I expect this tradition to continue.

Halo2
Halo 2 was owned by over a 3rd of Xbox users

If we look at the history of the Xbox it shows us one game can indeed sell a system. Halo 2 sold 8 million copies despite having a 25 million userbase. This means that almost a 3rd of Xbox users owned Halo 2 and without Halo you could argue that the Xbox wouldn’t be around at this moment in time. Similarly Halo 3 sold 15 million, Halo 4 around 9 million and Gears of war 1 and 2 sold 5 million each. So far the Xbox One is yet to show us anything that will sell the system but one game could change all that.

mario kart
System seller?

When we look at the Wii sales last gen it’s fair to say that their system seller was Mario Kart, I’ll ignore the false sales of Wii Sports considering it was bundled with pretty much every Wii in existence. Mario Kart is yet to be released and despite the Wii U only selling 5 million consoles this far there will be 35 million people who will want to continue playing Mario Kart from last-gen. This is why I believe that Mario Kart 8 will decide the future for Nintendo.

You could argue that the Playstation has more in terms of choice and quality by looking at these figures. In terms of single player games that is probably true, but todays gamer wants online play with every big release and Sony has yet to show they can get online play right when it matters. Graphical superiority it may have but until Sony finds that one game that will blow its competition out of the water then the race for top spot is certainly still on. Over to you Microsoft.

Over 90% of gamers do NOT own a ‘next-gen’ console

Last generation seen a total over over 260 million consoles sold across the 3 major consoles. That current figure for the ‘next-gen’ is currently sitting at just over 15 million. This means that less than 10% (closer to 5%) of gamers who owned a Wii, PS3 or Xbox 360 have one of the three new consoles. Of course, this doesn’t mean doom and gloom for any of the consoles considering their short life span, but it does mean that pretty much all of the market is up for grabs and we shouldn’t be too concerned by how a console is performing just yet.

What does this mean?

The current failure of the Wii has time to be reversed. Likewise, the Xbox One could pick up steam and take on the PS4 globally. With much internet flaming taking place from each camp, gamers must accept that the current hardware sales are a reflection of the battle and not the war. Those celebrating an early victory for Sony may yet be making a fool of themselves. I’m going to make a bold prediction and suggest that 2014 may yet be the year that Nintendo climbs back in to the frame, however if Mario Kart flops I shall be instantly retracting that statement.

Will current systems match sales numbers of old?

Probably not, we have a lot more choice as to what platform we choose these days. The rise of tablets and smartphones will undoubtedly severely dent console hardware sales. The decline in console hardware by numbers is illustrated on the graph below and shows a steady decline over the years.

Conclusion

Console gaming is undeniably losing a lot of market share to other gaming mediums. Surprisingly, only Microsofts Xbox One had the biggest launch in their personal console history. As the console market is shrinking the public may decide that 3 is a crowd and Nintendo looks the most frail at the minute. What would make YOU buy a next-gen console? and which side are you leaning towards?

The mentality of fanboys explained – sorted by console they support

You’re probably wondering the reasons why I have made separate posts championing each console. The truth is that it was part of an experiment to see how different sections of fanboys respond. So, if you were one of those who fell for my clickbait I thank you. I shall try to explain the mindset of each fanboy in this post by console they support. Some of you may be able to relate, whilst some of you may be infuriated at the suggestions I make. 10 Reasons to ditch your console and buy a PC

A lot of people were infuriated with my 10 reasons to buy a PS4, Xbox One and Wii U posts so I’ve decided to argue a case for the ‘Master Race’. I haven’t used the term ‘gaming PC’ in the title because this conjures up images of mis-sold, pre-built PCs from ebay which are overpriced and can’t get the job done. A lot of console gamers are unsure where to start when purchasing or building a PC but it could be a wise choice, here’s why. Keep reading…

10 Reasons why you should buy an Xbox One

It may be the more expensive of the three but that shouldn’t deter potential buyers, I will try to convince you it’s a worthy purchase in this post. Keep reading…
